Podcast Episode 113: The Blue-Haze Limb of Mars

While the color of
Mars is red, some photos show
Blue on the limb. Why?

While I’ve already addressed the True Color of Mars (episode 74), one remaining – and unmentioned – twist is the blue haze limb that is sometimes visible as the upper atmosphere in color images taken from Earth orbit; this episode addresses those. And, it’s a completely different phenomenon than just a crappy understanding of image analysis. Real science ensues!!

Feedback makes up over half of this episode. I talk about Episodes 112 (why Russell Humphreys thinks that magnetic fields should decay to begin with and how he made his prediction), 109 (a follow-up interview of Marshall Masters from just a few days ago), and 111 (general feedback and criticisms of the Cydonia movie).

Finally, TAM is less than 2.5 weeks away, and I’d love to meet my adoring fans you folks who tolerate listening to me every now-and-then. Please let me know if you’re going AND interested in meeting up. Otherwise, I may have to spend all my time with a Hershey chocolate -lover, and we don’t want that now, do we?

And über-finally, I got a special e-mail while I was recording this episode. Listen to it all the way through to hear it. 🙂

Oh, and super-düper-finally, about the release schedule: Some of you may have noticed has been a bit off lately. The excuses are the usual, but ostensibly, the podcast is “supposed” to come out on the 1st, 11th, and 21st of the month. And that’s how I date them in the RSS feed. But, in the intro, I state that this is an episode for a certain third of the month, so that’s been the justification in my head for being able to get it out a little late. And looking at my upcoming schedule, I think that you can probably expect more of the same at least until September. They should be on or about the 1st, 11th, and 21st, but won’t necessarily be exactly on those dates.

  1. Stuart, this sounds suspiciously like Episode 112

  2. Hat-tip to Dr. Heiser for mentioning you Stuart. Learning a lot from you, even when you speak in scientific and mathematical foreign tongues. 🙂

  3. Stuart, re: my previous comment. Mea culpa. When I played the episode from the email announcement, although it showed Episode 113, it actually played 112. Then I went to your website and all worked as advertised and I was able to listen to your usual superb job. Thanks –

  4. Stuart, Good episode. Re: the comment about how conspiracists seem to ignore agencies other than NASA when making their claims (or claiming that NASA controls what other agencies output.) this line from a 1988 Australian comic strip (Which I’ve sent you links to.) says it all, as background, the title character ‘Emerson’ has been convinced by his headshrinker that he’s been abducted by aliens and is now trying to explain it to his girlfriend with the aid of ‘bargain bin’ conspiracy books. He claims that according to the books the US Govt is hiding the truth about UFOs from “…it’s own people.” It’s then pointed out that they are not in the United States and that there is a whole world outside that country, the reply:

“Yes, but they (Meaning the CTs) don’t know that”

As for the update on Marshal Masters, looks like I was right about him continuing to shift the dates. I’d say there’s a very high probability that he does not believe what he is peddling. More likely he believes that his ‘high IQ’ gives him the right to put one over on all the people with ‘low IQs’. Glad to hear that at least some of the listeners were willing to question him. I wonder how many people called to query the date shifting and were blocked from getting through.

    • As a follow-up to the comments on Masters, I think I know where he got the ‘corkscrew orbit’ from, it goes like this. The Earth orbits the Sun. The Sun is moving through space as the Earth orbits it. The path the Earth would trace through the sky for an observer from a suitable view point would be a spiral pattern.
